YouTube to offer paid subscription — WTF?

I just received an email from YouTube. They’re advertising a Beta trial and other irrelevant products then this:

We’re excited to build on this momentum by taking another big step in favour of choice: offering fans an ad-free version of YouTube for a monthly fee. By creating a new paid offering, we’ll generate a new source of revenue that will supplement your fast growing advertising revenue.

After a year or so of monetizing my account on YouTube and over 25,000 views to my account; it was a long time ago and Google doesn’t count all views — eg people with AdBlocker aren’t counted, people who have ticked a box refusing voluntary collection of data aren’t counted.

At that time Google said they owed me about $41. I’d read the terms and conditions carefully, which led me to believe Google would pay sums over $15. Google didn’t ever send me any money. At all.

Google sent me A VOUCHER for $25 of “free” advertising. With Google.

I was disgusted and didn’t bother with the voucher, but my minion read the terms and conditions. He said that, according to the terms and conditions, I wasn’t eligible to use the voucher Google sent me through the paper post.

I was so disgusted that I removed all Google advertising from my YouTube account. I had previously removed Google advertising from my website because they were put irrelevant advertisements with tacky pictures or ugly text onto my website.

So. The solution to ads on YouTube? Don’t monetize your videos.

I’m not earning any money by not monetizing my videos but I wasn’t earning any money when they were monetized anyway.

And who wants to pay for a service that you currently get for free?

YouTube to offer paid subscription. Vote with your feet. I’ve been curious about Vimeo for some time…
