The Minute I Saw You by Paige Toon

the minute I saw youA review by Emma Streeton

When Hannah and Sonny meet – The Minute I Saw You (or they saw each other) – a spark ignites that is hard to ignore and impossible to forget. Weeks later, their paths cross again, but Sonny appears distant and reluctant to meet Hannah’s eye. It soon transpires that Sonny is at a crossroads. He’s committed to making serious life changes – ones that can’t and won’t include romance.

Hannah has her own reasons for wanting to keep their budding friendship platonic. Plus, she’s only in town temporarily, house-sitting for her uncle. But as the summer hots up and the chemistry between them intensifies, Hannah and Sonny discover that there’s more to each other than meets the eye.

I must admit this book pleasantly surprised me. Although I love a bit of romance, chick lit is not really my favorite genre. I was expecting a typical “boy meets girl then they fall in love” story but what I got was so much more. True, it is a love story. But, woven intricately into the plot, are some very serious issues. Toon deals sensitively and compassionately with these issues. I am not willing to go into what they are as I fear I will give away far too much of the twists and turns of Hannah and Sonny’s story. I encourage you to discover them for yourself and be amazed as the truths are revealed.

The verdict

The author’s narration is engaging. The main character Hannah is easy to relate to. You find yourself championing her from the very first chapter and hoping for a happy ending.  In addition, Toon has developed a great supporting cast of characters. A will they, won’t they plot, some sizzling chemistry and lovable characters combine to make this a real page turner.

I am new to Toon’s novels but I am aware she has a lot of loyal fans out there. They will not be disappointed by her latest offering, The Minute I Saw You. The slow burn and build up is excellent. Hannah, Sonny and the supporting characters are well-developed and add great depth to the novel. This book makes for an absolutely fabulous summer read. There would be no better paperback accompaniment to a warm day lounging in the sun. A hearty recommendation for anyone who loves slow burns, reluctant lovers, a lot of romance and, of course, fans of Toon.
