Updated list! Thanks again to everyone who’s been helping. Please send more relevant titles my way!
I’ve been compiling a list of speculative fiction books with disabled characters; a HUGE thank you to everyone who has contributed thus far!
I would really appreciate help in improving this list: adding books, filling in blanks and so on. Feel free to comment on this post, tweet at Dark Matter Zine or email me. My goal is to find at least 1000 books in the speculative fiction genre with disabled characters. One of my academic supervisors and I are collaborating on a paper, and building this list is the first step.
Please note: inclusion in this list is not a reflection or comment on the nature or quality of the work or the representation. This list is an attempt to be exhaustive.
FAQ: if a human disability, for example, being of short stature, features in a book where, like Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones, he’s the only one so he has barriers to participation, then someone being called a ‘dwarf’ counts for this list. However, where there is a race of dwarfs and society has developed to accommodate people of short stature, I would not include those in my list.
