Cosplayer: Phoenixiaoio
Series: Seisen no Iberia
Character: Saranda
Shiro Ang Yeong Hui is a cosplay photographer with a presence on Facebook. Shiro makes excellent use of colour, contrast and background in his photography of cosplayers. I love his use of texture, contrasting the grey vertical lines of Grecian pillars with Cvy’s guitar’s star-like lines. Kotani’s bright colours both blend and contrast with the dynamic angled background of stair rails that seem to reflect Kotani’s costume whilst also allowing the available light from the window to highlight and constrast. On this page Phoenixiaoio’s purple costume is enhanced by the contrasting colour and texture of the rock upon which she is sitting and the soft-focused trees in the background.
Shiro is so talented, I find it difficult to believe that Shiro hasn’t already achieved his dream of being a professional photographer.
After seeing some of Shiro’s awesome cosplay photos, I asked for an interview. This interview is only available in text format, as seen here.
Hi Shiro, thanks for agreeing to be interviewed by Dark Matter. Can you please tell me a bit about yourself?
One who loves photography, music, film, and art. I specialize in shooting portrait, live music, and concert photography. During my personal time, I enjoy shooting portraits, cosplay, animal photography, and attending cosplay conventions, both locally and internationally.
How did you get into photography?
When I first went to attend a local cosplay convention back in 2004, I brought a compact digital camera, merely with the thought of recording down the images for memory’s sake. From then onwards, my interest in photography grew and has continued to do so until now.
Is Photography your career or a hobby?
At the moment it’s a hobby, though I do take up freelance assignments every now and then.
Are you available for hire as a cosplay photographer?
Yes.
You are based in Singapore; do you travel with your photography?
Photography is a big part of my life. I love to take photos anytime, anywhere. So yes, I do photography on my trips, be it travel photography, personal or assignment shoots.
How did you develop this interest in photographing cosplay?
It was cosplay that initiated my interest in photography in the first place, and I do like anime, manga, and games. So it is not surprising that I hope to see characters I like coming to life, and using photography to portray them in the best way I can, and most importantly not forgetting to have fun during photoshoots.
Please tell me a bit about these photos. Who are the models? What are the characters they are cosplaying as?
Models (technically cosplayers are more of a proper term) are normally friends, met over the net or during conventions.
What are your plans for the future with photography and cosplay?
I would love to travel around the world, collaborate with different countries’ cosplayers, learn from other photographers, experience the country’s culture, and have fun at the same time. Outside of cosplay photography, I would like to do more of portrait, fashion, and concert photography.
