The Right Kind of Wrong (2013)

The Right Kind of WrongA review by C J Dee

Leo Palamino (Kwanten) is a married failed-writer-become-dishwasher whose wife started a blog detailing his flaws and annoying habits, called ‘Why You Suck’. When she leaves him, the blog becomes a worldwide phenomenon and she is given a book deal for the nitty gritty details.

After moping for a while Leo meets another woman and falls in love with her. On her wedding day. Leo makes it his life’s mission to win her over and show her why her husband sucks.

Regular readers will know that I am not generally a huge fan of comedy or romance movies. So rom-coms are usually a bit of a cringe-fest for me. Not always, but usually. (To the keen observers playing at home shouting ‘BUT YOU LOVE DISNEY MOVIES!’ at the computer screen/smartphone/tablet — that’s different. They are magical.)

Despite this, I decided I wanted to try something outside of my comfort zone and went trawling through the comedy section. When I happened across one starring Aussie actor Ryan Kwanten, I felt it was my patriotic duty to support the film. It had nothing to do with Ryan Kwanten being an attractive young chap. Nothing at all. Moving on.

Yet despite all of these things going against it and my less-than-pure motivation for watching, I found The Right Kind of Wrong to be an entertaining tale. It reminded me of The Sweetest Thing but with fewer songs about or around big penises.

The whole plot is predictable and sticks to the formula, but I find that to be the case with most rom-coms and don’t hold it against The Right Kind of Wrong. Just because it stops at all the familiar tourist spots doesn’t mean it took the same route. It took some of the major freeways but a couple of the detours were fun to explore.

Two of the funniest characters in the film come in the form of Leo’s friends, a vastly inappropriate married couple. He likes to foreplay while company is present, she made a Twitter for his ball sack. It’s the match made in heaven.

If you’re after a slightly left of centre rom-com with an indie vibe, then give The Right Kind of Wrong a go. If you don’t like it, at least you get to see the fluffy white kitties (not a euphemism).

‘Writing, and the pursuit of a woman, like any impossible dream, are not about immediate results.
They’re about telling the truth.’
