Pests by Emer Stamp

Pests: a rat swings from an incandescent light bulbA review by Emma Streeton

Stix is a tiny mouse who lives behind the washing machine. He has always followed his grandmother’s rules to avoid contact with the mans who lives in the flat. But he stumbles across PESTS – the Peewit Educatorium for Seriously Terrible Scoundrels. Here Stix makes friends (and enemies) with some of the other creatures in the house. He sets out to make a real PEST of himself.

My oldest bookworm read this independently. She shared her thoughts about this book with me, enabling me to write this review. I could tell this book was going to be a winner when each night attempting to switch off her light I was met with the sentence, “please just let me read one more chapter.” Thank goodness for the clever design of the front cover which glows in the dark. Her reward for eventually agreeing for lights to go out!

From the detailed account provided to me by my daughter I can see that this book is an awful lot of fun to read. As we join Stix on his first adventure beyond the washing machine he discovers what is lurking beneath Flat 3, Peewits Mansions. Stix discovers what fun and mayhem there is to be had when grandma’s rulebook is thrown out of the window. Along with his new band of friends, Stix learns new tricks, what it takes become ‘pest of the year’ at school and how to be brave.

The verdict

Pests provides the reader with a lot of laugh out loud moments. The illustrations are fantastic and only add to the humour. The characters are all well received, especially Stix. A mouse, a bat, a rat and all kinds of other pests involved in trickery and nuisance equals reading entertainment galore. Thanks for the giggles Emer Stamp.

My bookworm is super keen to see what mischief Stix gets himself into next and is hoping there is another pest adventure on the way soon!
