Places I visit (in no particular order)
- The Bloggess — by turns hilarious and heart-wrenching with genuine discussion of mental health issues. Jenny Lawson (the titular Bloggess) hits the NYT bestseller list every time she publishes.
- Australian Women Writers Challenge: the creators challenge readers to read books by Australian Women because books by men and books from overseas get so much more publicity. DMZ links our reviews on the AWW website. We have a category for Australian and New Zealand creators and another category for women creators.
- Hugos There Podcast discussing old Hugo Award winners; I was a guest when we discussed The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi.
- Nerds of a feather — mostly a spec fic review blog
- Pirates of the Burley Griffin — knowledgeable dude blogging about anime and other stuff I find interesting.
Individuals and organisations
- Zana Fraillon — her children’s and YA books include refugees, poverty, slavery
- Helen Lowe — author and poet extraordinaire who blogs
- Alice Wong — disability activist; New York Times article My Medicaid, My Life
Free software that may be useful:
- Audacity – free audio editing software
- Blubrry – free software that supports podcasts on WordPress sites
- Skype – Microsoft program. When a call is Skype-to-Skype audio or video, it’s free
- WordPress – free blogging software (please note: DMZ uses a purchased theme and addons)
- Yoast’s SEO plugin – a free plugin helping tailor posts to increase Page ranking. In my opinion, Yoast is an essential tool, so much so that I’ve purchased the ‘premium’ version.
