Dark Matter Zine Acknowledges this recording is taking place on the unceded Country of the Bunurong Peoples’ of the Kulin Nation as Traditional Owners and Custodians of this Country. I pay my respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.
Introducing author Kara H L Chen
Kara H L Chen grew up near Cleveland, Ohio, where she once had to shovel snow off her car with a plastic trashcan. She now lives on the West Coast with her husband and daughters, and is learning how to use an Instapot. Kara has undergraduate degrees in English and economics, a J.D., and a MFA in fiction. She has used her economics degree exactly once, when she tried to make a joke about marginal costs and marginal returns. It did not go well.
I love Kara’s second novel, Asking For A Friend, where Julianna Zhao’s partner for a business-centric teen challenge ghosts her. Desperate, Julianna asks an ex-friend, Gharret Zai, to partner with her, pointing out they could win scholarships to the schools of their choice and more. He agrees and, well, complications ensue. A coming of age story relevant to adults of all ages who must balance their hopes and dreams against who they want to be.
