John Harrison looks quizzically at the cameraThis is a Dark Matter Zine podcast and I’m your host Nalini Haynes. DMZ welcomes horror creator and storyteller John Harrison.

Dark Matter Zine Acknowledges this recording is taking place on the unceded Country of the Bunurong Peoples’ of the Kulin Nation as Traditional Owners and Custodians of this Country. I pay my respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.

Introducing horror creator John Harrison

John Harrison began his career directing rock videos and collaborating with famed horror director George Romero. He wrote and directed multiple episodes of Romero’s classic TV series, TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE, before helming the movie by the same name. That movie won the Grand Prix du Festival at Avoriaz, France.

Harrison wrote and directed multiple TV episodes for a variety of networks as well as world premiere TV movies and miniseries, including two Emmy winning miniseries adaptations of Frank Herbert’s DUNE and CHILDREN OF DUNE. He co-wrote the Disney animated feature, DINOSAUR, and wrote and directed the theatrical adaptation of Clive Barker’s BOOK OF BLOOD. John’s three-episode mini-series RESIDUE, is on Netflix. He is currently writing and directing episodes of the CREEPSHOW TV series on Shudder/AMC, as well as writing/directing the new horror podcast, SOUNDS SCARY.

However, today we’re here to talk about John’s new book Passing Through Veils.

A fusion of Shirley Jackson and Gillian Flynn, Passing Through Veils is a gripping psychological thriller about a woman facing a dark past and a damaged present, and the ghostly thin veil that separates the two.

Interview meanderings and questions

Harrison described his book.

You’ve made a career out of working on screen productions. How did that inform Passing Through Veils?

Why move from screen to write a book?

Acknowledgement of Country

Dark Matter Zine Acknowledges this recording is taking place on the unceded Country of the Bunurong Peoples’ of the Kulin Nation as Traditional Owners and Custodians of this Country. I pay my respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.

(I have occasionally acknowledged Country in podcasts. This year I aim to lift my game in many areas, so I plan to Acknowledge Country in every podcast. An Acknowledgement of Traditional Owners can be done by anyone. It’s a way of showing awareness of, and respect for, the Aboriginal Traditional Owners of the land where a meeting or event is held. For more information about Country and respect for Australia’s First Nations, read this post that also has links to useful websites.)
