This year, to celebrate the International Day of Disability, I attended the Write Ability workshop, one of a series of workshops by people with disabilities for people with disabilities at Writers Victioria.
Part of the workshop involved a writing exercise where we were encouraged to write a letter to a fictional character. I wrote the following to C J Dennis’s Triantiwontigongolope.
In your world where everything is different and fantastical and anything is possible,
I wonder…
Could I be allowed to work for money so I can pay my bills?
Could my efforts be appreciated by those I support?
Could I make friends, recognising and relating to kindred spirits?
Could I grow wings and fly?
