A review by Emma Streeton
This beautifully illustrated novel is an absolute must have for fans who are keen to learn more about the fascinating and fantastical world of Artemis Fowl. The book compiles Artemis Fowl’s knowledge gathered from the The Book of the People (a book within the Artemis Fowl series) and his time with magical creatures.
Dwarf Nord Diggums ‘wrote’ this book with contributions from experts in the field of all things relating to magical creatures. The guide provides interesting information and facts on a variety of beings who appear in the world of Artemis Fowl. The guide to the world of fairies is aimed at us Mud People (humans) so that we can better understand the ways of the fairies. I have just read and fallen in love with the Artemis Fowl series. Spending time pouring over this creatively written and wonderfully illustrated book was a pleasure.
Book structure: a fiction version of a nonfiction book
Each chapter focuses on different mystical beings including Trolls, Centaurs, Dwarves, Pixies, etc. There is also a chapter on Fairy technology and the equipment used by the Lower Elements Police (LEP). My personal favorite of each chapter was the Spotter’s Guide which provides information on how to spot the underground creatures, their habits, appearance and abilities. Everything to fuel the imagination of Artemis Fowl enthusiasts.
The numerous full color illustrations are an absolute delight. My bookworms, who have yet to delve into the world of Artemis Fowl, are big fairy enthusiasts. They really enjoyed flicking through the pages and studying the creatures in detail. There was gasps and giggles. They were very clear about which ones they would not like to bump into, goblins and trolls being at the top of their list!
Overall, this book is a whole lot of fun. The Guide to the World of Fairies isa great book to dip into. It really complements the Artemis Fowl series. The illustrations are the real winning ingredient to a book that is sure to please.
