The Fear of Darkness launches production on the Gold Coast

Fear of Darkness

Press release

Pandala Films Pty Ltd is pleased to announce it has begun production on The Fear of Darkness: a supernatural thriller directed by Chris Fitchett and produced by Mark Overett.

The Fear of Darkness stars Australian actresses Maeve Dermody (Griff the Invisible, Serangoon Road) and Penelope Mitchell (The Vampire Diaries, Hemlock Grove). In the film, a brilliant young psychiatrist is forced to confront the dark creature that dwells deep within her own unconscious mind when she investigates the supernatural disappearance of a university student.

Renowned Brisbane actor Damien Garvey (Underbelly, Rake) also joins the cast.

Cast and crew look forward to working on what has been described as “an original thriller with strong audience appeal” by Gary Hamilton, Managing Director of international sales agency, Arclight Films.

The film will shoot for four weeks on the Gold Coast in March; including 2 weeks at Village Roadshow Studios and one week on campus at Bond University.

Chris Fitchett is possibly best known for his producer work on popular features Blurred, Under the Radar and A Heartbeat Away, but his directorial resume is no-less impressive with such titles as Blood Money (starring Bryan Brown) and Desolation Angels.

No stranger to ambitious feature projects, Mark Overett previously produced Separation City and the AFI award-winning drama, Unfinished Sky. Most recently, Overett produced the sci-fi comedy Iron Sky, which was a crowdfunding phenomenon.

Every supernatural thriller needs at least something a bit spooky – and the production team is delighted that Brisbane-based Cutting Edge has come on board the project providing Visual Effects and Post Production services.

The Fear of Darkness had been previously selected for development through Screen Queensland’s Low Budget Feature Film Initiative as well as being selected for SPAAmart in Melbourne in 2012.

Finance for the film is a mix of private investment, Producer Offset, sales guarantee and production investment from Screen Queensland.

The Fear of Darkness will be distributed in Australia through Greenlight Releasing, while Arclight Films will handle international sales. It is expected that the film will release in Australia early in 2015.
