Charles Soule

He is a thirty-something Caucasian man, bearded, wearing a dark jacket over a lighter tee and jeans. The Endless Vessel by Charles Soule book cover. This is a Dark Matter Zine podcast and I’m your host Nalini Haynes. Today I interview Charles Soule, author, comic book creator, Marvel and Star Wars guy.

Dark Matter Zine Acknowledges this recording is taking place on the unceded Country of the Bunurong Peoples’ of the Kulin Nation as Traditional Owners and Custodians of this Country. I pay my respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.

Charles Soule is a New York-based, #1 New York Times-best-selling novelist, comic book writer, musician, and former attorney. While he has worked for DC and other publishers, he is best known for writing Daredevil, She-Hulk, Death of Wolverine, and various Star Wars comics from Marvel Comics and much much more.

What I cut from the podcast: some of the other things Charles wrote are Star Wars, The Rise of Kylo Ren, Darth Vader, Poe Dameron, Lando and more), and his creator-owned series Eight Billion Genies and Curse Words (with Ryan Browne), Undiscovered Country (with Scott Snyder & Giuseppe Camuncoli), Letter 44 (with Alberto Jimenez Alburquerque) and the Shrouded College series (with Will Sliney), which began with Book I: Hell to Pay in November 2022.

Charles is a creative consultant for Lucasfilm, Ltd, and one of the founding architects of STAR WARS: THE HIGH REPUBLIC, a multi-platform Star Wars saga kicked off by his #1 New York Times’ best-selling novel Light of the Jedi, released in January 2021. In addition, he worked as the legal consultant for the 2022 Disney+ television She-Hulk: Attorney-at-Law.

Planned interview questions and talking points

Please tell us about your book Endless Vessel.

Your opening scene is so powerful: the curator racing to unlock the Mona Lisa from its fireproof box to hold it aloft while burning alive.

Endless Vessel is set either just after our current pandemic, with The Grey being the new pandemic. Do you think it’s evident, in some form, now?

Wordys (smart phones reduced to only allow written words, no images, sound or video) vs smart phones: do you think we need them now?

Grey: depression, suicide or despair underlying manic joy.

You were a legal consultant on She-Hulk. Firstly, love the series. Secondly – how does an author become a legal consultant and what kind of advice did you give?

The wrap

I would have LOVED to talk to Charles for another half hour AT LEAST but my deal with my AV editor is that he’ll do weekly podcasts if I keep the finished product at half an hour or less. So I invited Charles to return when he launches his next book. I hope he puts me in his diary!

Acknowledgement of Country

Dark Matter Zine Acknowledges this recording is taking place on the unceded Country of the Bunurong Peoples’ of the Kulin Nation as Traditional Owners and Custodians of this Country. I pay my respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.

(I have occasionally acknowledged Country in podcasts. This year I aim to lift my game in many areas, so I plan to Acknowledge Country in every podcast. An Acknowledgement of Traditional Owners can be done by anyone. It’s a way of showing awareness of, and respect for, the Aboriginal Traditional Owners of the land where a meeting or event is held. For more information about Country and respect for Australia’s First Nations, read this post that also has links to useful websites.)

Thanks

Thank you to today’s guest Charles Soule! At this stage I don’t know who my next guest will be, so watch this space. This has been a Dark Matter Zine podcast, I’m your host Nalini Haynes. Thank you for listening, stay safe and have fun.

Note

You might recall this promo I published about the Endless Vessel. If not, pop over there and see what other people say about this book.
