Alex Adsett (agent for authors) discusses contracts

Alex Adsett is a publishing consultant and literary agent who offers commercial contract advice to authors and publishers, including for print, digital, film and self-publishing contracts. She also represents select genre authors as a more traditional agent.

Alex has written Just A Standard Contract… published on the Writers Victoria website.

Contracts. Don’t blindly trust that a contract will be appropriate.

The minion received a contract for employment once that probably violated Australian law. When he turned down the job, the contracting company representative responsible whined, saying the terms were negotiable: he could have renegotiated the contract so they couldn’t force him to work without pay or to pay them for the privilege of working for them! The terms of that contract were so appalling I’m glad he refused to deal with that employer.

Be careful. Read your contract. Get it checked by a professional who is on your side.
